So, What Exactly Does A Private Investigator Do? One of the most common questions we hear is, “So, what exactly does a private investigator do?” We see varying depictions of pi’s in movies and television and the jokes of “so you’re basically a professional stalker, right?”, but how much of these stereotypes are actually rooted in fact?
While it is true that surveillance and tracking are key components of the investigative process, there is much more involved (not to mention training and experience)! While there are some standard foundations to each investigation, every case requires different tactics. Generally speaking, here is a BRIEF overview of the investigative “process”
A criminal case, just as it sounds, involves some sort of criminal activity. Whether it be an arrest or conviction, we are contracted to help uncover the facts. We deal with all types of cases, from assault and battery to murder, and everything in between. A typical criminal case usually involves studying police reports, reviewing recorded/written statements or interviews, reviewing any evidence collected or outside investigation reports/results. We here at CIS also do crime scene reenactment, locate and interview witnesses and provide court testimony, among many other things.
Private cases typically involve infidelity, fraud or locating someone, along with a variety of other reasons. These cases involve various types of surveillance, GPS tracking, digital phone extraction, and background investigations to name just a few.
